Clean the YUM Cache in CentOS

Yellowdog Updater, Modifier is a free and open-source command-line package manager that goes by the acronym YUM. It is created with the RPM Package Manager for Linux-powered systems. With RPM-based distributions, you may use YUM to automatically update packages and manage dependencies. Even if the package is downloaded, installed, or deleted, there’s a potential that it will still remain in YUM’s cache. It is evident that the majority of cache packages may be located in /var/cache/yum.

If you need to free up disk space or repair issues brought on by damaged metadata files, you might need to empty the YUM cache.

To clear YUM cache you need to be logged in to the server as root user and then execute following commands.

1) Clean all the cached packages located in the enabled repository cache directory.

yum clean packages

2) Delete the package headers.

yum clean headers

3) Delete metadata of all the enabled repository.

yum clean metadata

4) Clean all the cached information.

yum clean all
