How to change the maximum upload file size for PHP scripts

This article describes how to change the maximum upload file size for PHP scripts by using the upload_max_filesize and post_max_size php directives. 

Changing the maximum upload file size

PHP scripts have a maximum upload file size of 128 megabytes by default. You might wish to adjust these limitations, though. To stop visitors from uploading huge files to your website, for instance, you might establish a lower limit. Modify the upload_max_filesize and post_max_size directives to achieve this.

The upload_max_filesize directive should be somewhat greater than the post_max_size directive in order to guarantee proper file upload functionality. To limit a file upload to 20 megabytes, for instance, use the following settings:

upload_max_filesize = 20M
post_max_size = 21M
