What Can You Install on a VPS?

A VPS gives you your own space on a server. This guide explains what kinds of software you can put on it, so you can plan what to build.

What is a VPS?

VPS stands for Virtual Private Server. Think of a big building cut into private flats. Each flat has its own keys, its own space and its own rules. Your VPS is one flat.

Because the flat is yours, you decide what goes inside. This is the main difference from shared hosting, where many people use one set of tools.

Kinds of software you can install

Web servers

A web server shows your website to visitors. Common choices are Apache, Nginx and LiteSpeed.

Databases

A database is a digital filing cabinet that stores information. You can install MySQL, MariaDB or PostgreSQL.

Programming languages

You can run PHP, Python, Node.js, Ruby, Java and many others. Pick the one your app needs.

Websites and apps

You can install WordPress, Joomla, Laravel apps, online shops and forums. You can also run tools you build yourself.

Control panels

A control panel is a screen with buttons that makes server work easier. Examples are cPanel and similar tools. Some need a paid licence. Ask Hostvento support what is available for your plan.

Other useful tools

  • Mail servers, to send and receive email.
  • Git, to keep track of code changes.
  • Docker, to run apps in small sealed boxes called containers.
  • Automation tools such as n8n.
  • Game servers and private file storage.

Things to check first

  1. Find out which operating system your VPS uses. It is the main program that runs the server, such as AlmaLinux, Ubuntu or Windows. Your welcome email should say.
  2. Check that the software works with that operating system.
  3. Check how much memory and disk space the software needs. Your plan details show what you have.
  4. Make sure you have the right to use the software. Some programs need a licence.
Tip: Do not install everything at once. Each program uses memory. Add one tool at a time and watch how the server behaves.

Some things are not allowed on any host, such as illegal content or attacks on other computers. Ask support if you are unsure whether your plan allows something.

Quick recap

  • A VPS is your own private space on a server.
  • You can install web servers, databases, languages, apps and tools.
  • Check your operating system and your resources first.
  • Install one thing at a time.
  • Ask Hostvento support if you are not sure something is allowed.
