What Is Automatic Vertical Scaling?

This guide explains how a cloud server can get more power, such as memory, by itself when it needs it.

What is scaling?

Scaling means changing how much computer power you have. A busy website needs more power than a quiet one.

What is vertical scaling?

Vertical means up and down. You make one server stronger instead of adding more servers.

Think of a backpack. When it is too small, you swap it for a bigger one. You still carry one bag, but it holds more.

A server has these main parts:

  • CPU, the brain that does the work.
  • RAM, the short-term memory the server uses while working.
  • Disk, the place where files are stored.

Vertical scaling raises the CPU and RAM for your server. Scaling up means more power. Scaling down means less.

What does automatic mean?

With automatic scaling, the cloud watches how much of your CPU and RAM you use. When you use too much, it gives you more. When the rush ends, it can take the extra away.

How it usually works

  1. You set the smallest and the largest size your server may have.
  2. The cloud watches the use of CPU and RAM.
  3. If use stays high, the cloud raises the limit.
  4. If use stays low, the cloud lowers it again.

Vertical or horizontal?

QuestionVerticalHorizontal
What changes? One server gets biggerMore servers are added
Easy to use?Yes, your site needs no changeSite must work on many servers
Limit?A single server can only grow so bigCan grow much more

Good things about it

  • It is simple. Your site does not need to change.
  • Slow times caused by low memory can be avoided.
  • You pay for extra power only when it is used, on services that bill this way.

Things to remember

  • A server cannot grow forever. It has a top size.
  • On some systems, a resize needs a short restart.
Tip: Not every plan has automatic scaling. Ask Hostvento support if your plan includes it and how billing works.

Quick recap

  • Vertical scaling makes one server stronger.
  • Automatic means the cloud adjusts CPU and RAM for you.
  • It is simple but has a top limit.
  • Horizontal scaling adds more servers instead.
  • Ask support whether your plan offers it.
