What is a timeout?
Apache is the program that sends web pages to visitors. When a page needs a long time to build, Apache waits. But it will not wait forever. After a set number of seconds, it gives up. This is a timeout. The visitor sees an error such as 504 Gateway Timeout, 500 Internal Server Error or a blank page.
Why shared servers have limits
A shared server hosts many websites at once. They share the same memory and power. If one slow script could run for ever, it would hurt everyone. So the server has time limits. These are set for the whole server, and you cannot change them yourself.
Common causes
- A heavy script, such as a big import or backup run inside the browser.
- A slow database query.
- A plugin or theme that calls another site that is slow to answer.
- Too many visitors at once.
- Large file uploads on a slow connection.
What you can try
- Reload the page after a minute. It may be a short spike.
- Switch off new plugins or extensions one by one. In WordPress, rename the
pluginsfolder in File Manager to turn them all off. - Turn on caching. Caching saves a ready page so it does not need to be built every time.
- Check the PHP time limit. In cPanel, open MultiPHP INI Editor. Look at
max_execution_time. You can raise it a little, but the server's own limit still applies. - Do big jobs in smaller parts. Import a big file in pieces instead of all at once.
- Use cPanel tools or a cron job for long tasks. A cron job is a task the server runs on a schedule, not in a browser window.
- Check the Errors page in cPanel for hints.
When to ask for help
If your site times out often, ask Hostvento support to check the server and your account. Open a ticket at https://secure.hostvento.com/submitticket.php. Tell them the page address, the time of the error and what you did.
Support may also suggest a plan with more power, such as a VPS, if your site has grown.
Quick recap
- A timeout means Apache gave up waiting for a page.
- Shared servers set limits that protect all sites.
- Try caching, fewer plugins and smaller jobs.
- Ask Hostvento support if it keeps happening.
