What is Dreamweaver?
Dreamweaver is a program for building websites. It was first made by Macromedia and is now owned by Adobe. It helps you write pages without much typing. The result is ordinary web files, such as HTML pages, CSS style files, JavaScript files and pictures. HTML is the language browsers read to show a page.
Does it need special hosting?
No. Dreamweaver sites are normal files, so most web hosting can serve them. You do not need hosting with a "Dreamweaver" label. The only exception is if you used server-side code, such as PHP. Then your hosting must support that language. Ask Hostvento support if you are unsure what your plan includes.
Steps to publish your site
- Get your FTP details from your welcome email. FTP is a way to move files between your computer and your hosting. You need the host name, user name and password.
- Open Dreamweaver and open your site.
- Choose Site and then Manage Sites.
- Select your site and click the edit icon.
- Open the Servers section and add a new server.
- Choose FTP as the connection type.
- Enter the host, user name and password.
- In the root directory box, type
public_html. This is the usual folder for a live site, but yours may differ. - Click Test. A success message means the details are right.
- Save the settings.
- Open the Files panel and click Put (the up arrow) to upload your pages.
Point your domain to the hosting
Your domain is your website address. It must point to your hosting. This is set by nameservers, which tell the internet where your site lives. Your welcome email lists the right ones. You can manage your domain in the client area.
Tips
- Your home page should be named
index.htmlso it opens first. - Keep file names in lowercase, with no spaces.
- You can also use any other FTP program, such as FileZilla.
