What is FTP?
FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. It is a way to send files from your computer to your website. A program such as FileZilla does this for you. Error 553 means the server refused the file. The words "disk full" mean the storage space for your account is used up.
Why does it happen?
- Your hosting plan has a storage limit and you reached it.
- Old backups, logs or emails take a lot of room.
- A very large file, such as a video, filled the space.
- Sometimes the whole server disk is full. In that case, only the host can fix it.
Steps to check and free space
- Log in to your hosting control panel.
- Look for a Disk Usage tool. Open it.
- See which folders are biggest.
- Open the File Manager and look in those folders.
- Find old backup files, which often end in
.zipor.tar.gz. - Download anything you want to keep to your own computer.
- Delete the files you no longer need.
- Empty the trash in the File Manager if there is one.
- Try your upload again.
Clean up email space
Email also counts toward your storage. Open your webmail and remove old messages and spam. Then empty the Trash and Spam folders.
Check the file size
If one file is huge, try to make it smaller. Compress large pictures or host videos on a video site.
If you have lots of free space
If your disk usage looks fine, the server may be full or there may be a quota problem. Open a support ticket and give us the full error text and your domain name.
If you need more room, log in to the client area and look at your service. You can also ask support about upgrade options.
