Some words first
- SEO means search engine optimization. It is the work that helps your site show up in Google and other search engines.
- An IP address is the number that points to your server. It is like a house number.
- A datacenter is a building full of servers.
- DNS is the phone book of the internet. It turns your site name into the server's number.
Will rankings drop?
A move on its own does not punish your site. Search engines care about your content and whether your site works. A short drop can still happen if something goes wrong during the move. The main risks are:
- Your site is down for a long time.
- Pages break or show errors after the move.
- The new server is slower than the old one.
- Page addresses change by mistake.
Location can matter a little. A server near your visitors usually loads pages faster. Speed helps both visitors and rankings.
Steps for a safe move
- Take a full backup of your files and databases. A database stores your site's content and settings.
- Copy your site to the new host and test it before you switch.
- Keep the same page addresses, called URLs.
- Lower your DNS TTL a day before the move if your DNS provider allows it. TTL is how long others remember your old settings.
- Change your DNS to point to the new server.
- Keep the old hosting active for a few days until the change spreads everywhere.
- Check your pages, forms and SSL certificate. An SSL certificate gives you the padlock and the https in the address.
- Look at Google Search Console for new errors. It is a free tool from Google that reports how your site is doing.
Tip: Move at a quiet time, such as late at night, when fewer people visit.
After the move
Watch your traffic for two weeks. Small changes are normal. If pages vanish from search, check for broken links and missing redirects. A redirect sends visitors from an old address to a new one.
Quick recap
- Moving does not hurt SEO by itself.
- Downtime, broken pages and slow speed cause the harm.
- Back up first and test before you switch.
- Keep URLs the same.
- Watch Search Console after the move.
