What does migrating mean?

Migrating means moving your site from one hosting company to another. A website has two parts. The first is files, such as pages and pictures. The second is a database, which stores things like posts and settings. You must move both.

Warning: Do not cancel your old hosting yet. You need it until the new site works.

Step 1: Back up your old site

  1. Log in to the control panel of your old host. Many use cPanel.
  2. Open File Manager. Select everything in public_html and choose Compress. Pick a zip file.
  3. Download the zip file to your computer.
  4. Open phpMyAdmin. It is a tool for databases. Select your database and click Export. Save the .sql file.

Step 2: Prepare the new hosting

  1. Log in to cPanel at Hostvento. The link and details are in your welcome email.
  2. Open MySQL Databases. Create a new database, a new user and a password. Add the user to the database with all privileges.
  3. Write the three names down.

Step 3: Upload and import

  1. Open File Manager and go to public_html.
  2. Upload your zip file and choose Extract.
  3. Open phpMyAdmin. Select the new database and click Import. Choose your .sql file.
  4. Edit your site's config file. For WordPress, this is wp-config.php. Put in the new database name, user and password.

Step 4: Test before you switch

Your domain still points to the old host. To see the new copy first, use a temporary preview link if your plan has one. Or ask Hostvento support how to preview. Check pages, images, forms and logins.

Step 5: Point your domain to Hostvento

  1. Log in to where your domain is registered.
  2. Replace the old nameservers with the ones in your Hostvento welcome email.
  3. Wait a few hours up to two days. This is called propagation. It means the change is spreading across the internet.

Step 6: Final checks

  • Visit your site and test it.
  • Set up email accounts again if needed.
  • Check your SSL certificate, which gives the padlock.
  • Cancel the old hosting only after a week or so.

If you get stuck, open a ticket at https://secure.hostvento.com/submitticket.php.
