What does the error mean?
A database is where your website keeps its data, like posts, users and orders. MySQL is a popular database program. Each time your site needs data, it opens a connection, which is a short phone call to the database. A server allows only a certain number of calls at once for each database user.
When the limit is reached, you see: User already has more than 'max_user_connections' active connections. New visitors may then see a blank page or a database error.
Common causes
- A sudden burst of visitors.
- Slow pages that keep connections open for a long time.
- A plugin or script that is badly written.
- Bots or hackers hitting your site again and again.
- Many sites sharing one database user.
Steps to fix it
- Wait a minute and reload. Connections close by themselves, and the site often recovers.
- Log in to cPanel and open Metrics then Visitors or Raw Access. Look for one address sending many requests.
- Turn on caching. Caching saves ready-made pages so the site asks the database less. For WordPress, use a caching plugin.
- Disable plugins you do not need. Turn them off one at a time to find the one that causes load.
- Update your CMS, plugins and theme to the latest versions. Older ones may leave connections open.
- Open phpMyAdmin and use Status to see running processes. Look for queries that run for a long time.
- In cPanel, use MySQL Databases and tidy up. Remove old unused databases.
- Block bad traffic with a firewall or a tool like Cloudflare, if it is on your plan.
max_user_connections in the MySQL config file, then restart MySQL. Raising it too high can use up memory. Fix the cause first. When to contact support
On shared hosting, the limit is set by the server, so you cannot change it. Open a ticket at https://secure.hostvento.com/submitticket.php. Tell them the time of the error and the exact message.
Quick recap
- The error means too many database connections are open.
- Caching and fewer plugins reduce the load.
- Look for bots and slow queries.
- Update your software.
- Ask support if the limit stays reached.
