Use the cloudlinux-selector tool from the command line

cloudlinux-selector is a command-line tool for managing Node.js, Python and Ruby apps on CloudLinux servers. This guide explains what it does and how to run it. It needs root access, so it is for VPS and dedicated server users with CloudLinux.

What is it?

CloudLinux is a version of Linux made for hosting. Its Selector feature lets each user pick the language version for their app, such as a Node.js version. In the control panel you click buttons. The cloudlinux-selector tool does the same work by typing commands. This is handy for scripts, or for managing many accounts from one place.

"Remote usage" means you connect to the server over SSH (a safe way to type commands on a faraway computer) and run the tool there. Another program can also run it the same way.

Before you start

  • Your server must run CloudLinux with the Selector feature turned on.
  • You need root access over SSH.
  • Not sure CloudLinux is on your plan? Ask Hostvento support.

Steps

  1. Open a terminal on your computer.
  2. Connect to your server. Use the IP address from your welcome email:
ssh root@YOUR_SERVER_IP

This logs you in as the root user.

  1. See the apps of one user. Replace username with the real account name:
cloudlinux-selector get --json --interpreter nodejs --user username

This lists the Node.js apps and their settings. The --json part prints the answer in a tidy format that programs can read.

  1. To see the other languages, change nodejs to python or ruby.
  2. Run cloudlinux-selector --help to see every command and option your version supports.

Things to remember

  • Commands that create, change or destroy apps can affect live websites. Take a backup first.
  • Option names can differ a little between versions. Trust the output of --help on your server.
  • Use the exact username of the account, not the domain name.
Tip: Start with read-only commands like get. They show information and change nothing.

Quick recap

  • cloudlinux-selector manages app languages on CloudLinux from the command line.
  • Connect with SSH as root, then run the tool.
  • Use get to look, and --help to learn more.
  • Back up before you change anything.
