Fix problems uploading files in cPanel File Manager

If an upload fails or gets stuck, one of a few common causes is usually behind it. This guide helps you find and fix it.

What is File Manager?

File Manager is a tool inside cPanel. It works like the folders on your computer, but for the files of your website. cPanel is the control panel you log in to for your hosting. Your login details are in your welcome email.

Cause 1: Your storage is full

Each plan has a limit on disk space. A full account cannot take new files.

  1. On the cPanel home page, check the storage figure on the right side.
  2. If it is close to full, delete files you no longer need. Take a backup of anything important first.
  3. Try the upload again.

Cause 2: The file is too big

The server limits the size of one upload. Large files may fail.

  1. Compress the files into a zip file.
  2. Split very large files into smaller zips.
  3. Upload the zip, then select it in File Manager and click Extract.

You can also use an FTP program such as FileZilla. It handles big files better.

Cause 3: Wrong folder or permissions

Permissions are rules about who may change a folder. If a folder is locked, you cannot add to it.

  1. Right-click the folder in File Manager.
  2. Choose Change Permissions.
  3. Folders normally use 755.
  4. Click Change Permissions to save.

Do not use 777. It lets anyone write to the folder, which is unsafe.

Cause 4: Too many files (inodes)

An inode is a counter for each file and folder. Plans may limit it. A site with many cache or email files can reach the limit even with free disk space. Delete old cache, spam and unused backups.

Cause 5: Browser trouble

  1. Try a different browser.
  2. Turn off extensions such as ad blockers for the cPanel page.
  3. Clear your cache and cookies.
  4. Check that your internet connection is steady.

Cause 6: File name problems

Very long names or odd symbols can fail. Use letters, numbers, dashes and underscores only.

Tip: Still stuck? Open a ticket at https://secure.hostvento.com/submitticket.php. Tell support the file name, its size and any error text.

Quick recap

  • Check free disk space and file count first.
  • Zip big uploads or use FTP.
  • Folder permissions should normally be 755.
  • Try another browser if the page misbehaves.
