What is ping?
Ping sends a tiny message to another computer and waits for a reply. It is like shouting "hello" across a field and timing how long the echo takes. A server is a computer that stores your website and sends it to visitors.
How to run a ping test
- On Windows, press the Windows key and type cmd. Open Command Prompt.
- On Mac or Linux, open the Terminal app.
- Type the command below and press Enter. Replace
example.comwith your own domain name.
ping example.com
This sends several small messages to your domain and shows each reply. On Linux and Mac it keeps going until you press Ctrl and C together.
How to read the result
A normal reply line looks like this:
Reply from 203.0.113.10: bytes=32 time=48ms TTL=56
- Reply from is the IP address that answered. An IP address is the number address of a computer on the internet.
- bytes is the size of the small message.
- time is how many milliseconds the round trip took. A millisecond is one thousandth of a second. Lower is better.
- TTL means "time to live". It is a counter that stops a message from travelling forever.
The summary at the end
When the test ends, you see a summary. Look at the packets line. A packet is one small piece of data. It shows how many were sent and how many were lost. Zero lost is what you want. The summary also shows the lowest, highest and average time.
Common problem messages
| Message | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Request timed out | No answer came back in time. The server may be down, slow, or blocking ping. |
| Destination host unreachable | Your network cannot find a path to the server. |
| Could not find host / unknown host | The domain name did not turn into an IP address. Check the spelling and your domain's DNS settings. |
