What is JBoss?
Java is a programming language used for large business programs. A Java web application is a program that runs on a server and shows pages to visitors. It needs a special server to run in, called an application server. JBoss is a free application server. Today it is known as WildFly, and a supported business edition is called JBoss EAP. Older versions kept the name JBoss AS.
Think of a plain web server as a bookshelf, handing out ready pages. An application server is a workshop that builds the page with Java code first.
What JBoss hosting means
It is a hosting setup where JBoss is installed and ready, or where you may install it yourself. Because JBoss needs a lot of memory and settings, it is not common on basic shared plans. It is more often run on a VPS or dedicated server. Ask Hostvento support whether your plan can run JBoss or WildFly.
What you need
- Java: a JDK (Java Development Kit) of the right version.
- Enough memory: Java servers use a lot of RAM, the working memory of a computer.
- Root access: to install software and open ports.
- Open ports: JBoss and WildFly often use port 8080 for web pages and 9990 for the admin console. Open only what you need.
Basic steps to run it on a Linux VPS
This guide needs root access.
- Connect to your server with SSH.
- Install Java from your system's package manager.
- Download the WildFly or JBoss package from its official project site.
- Unpack the download into a folder such as
/opt. - Create a user just for running it. This is safer than using root.
- Start it with the script in the
binfolder, for examplestandalone.sh. - Open
http://your-server-ip:8080in a browser to see the welcome page. - Deploy your app. Deploying means placing your
.warfile, a packed Java web app, in thestandalone/deploymentsfolder.
Warning: Do not leave the admin console open to the whole internet. Use strong passwords and limit access with a firewall.
