The short answer
Changing your host does not hurt your ranking by itself. Search engines care about your content and your web address. If those stay the same and the site stays online, your ranking should stay steady.
What can go wrong
- Downtime: if your site is offline for a long time, search engines may not reach it.
- Broken pages: missing files cause errors.
- Changed links: if page addresses change, old links lead nowhere.
- Slower speed: a slow server can hurt how people and search engines see your site.
- Blocked search engines: some people forget to turn indexing back on after testing.
Indexing means a search engine reads your pages and adds them to its list.
Steps for a safe move
- Make a full backup of your files and database.
- Set up your site on the new host first. Do not turn off the old one yet.
- Test the copy. Click through the main pages.
- Keep the same page addresses (URLs).
- Change your domain's nameservers to point to the new host. Nameservers tell the internet where your site lives. Your new host gives you these details.
- Wait for the change to spread. This can take up to a day or two.
- Keep the old hosting active for a few days, just in case.
- Check that the site opens with HTTPS and that SSL works.
- Check that no setting blocks search engines. In WordPress, look under Settings, then Reading.
- Watch your pages in Google Search Console for errors. This is a free tool from Google.
Tip: Hostvento support can help with moving a site. Open a support ticket to ask.
Quick recap
- Moving hosts alone will not lower your ranking.
- Avoid long downtime and broken links.
- Keep the same page addresses.
- Test first, then switch nameservers.
- Check for errors after the move.
