What is GitLab and why run it on a VPS?

Self-managed GitLab keeps your source code on a server you control. It includes merge requests, issue tracking, a container registry and CI/CD.

GitLab needs more memory than most applications. The official minimum is 4 GB RAM, and 8 GB is better for a team.

How to set up GitLab on your VPS

  1. Order a VPS with Ubuntu LTS and at least 8 GB RAM.
  2. Add the official GitLab package repository.
  3. Install the gitlab-ce package with your domain as the external URL.
  4. Log in as root with the generated password and change it.
  5. Add a GitLab Runner, on this or another server, for CI jobs.

Which plan to choose

Choose LinuxVPS Power (8 GB RAM) or higher. Run CI runners on a second VPS if builds are heavy.

GitLab VPS questions

Is GitLab free to self-host?

The Community Edition is free and open source.

How much RAM does GitLab need?

4 GB at minimum. 8 GB gives a comfortable margin.

Can I run CI on the same server?

Yes for light jobs. Heavy builds slow the web interface, so a separate runner is better.

Does the VPS price change at renewal?

No. The monthly price stays the same.
