What is Vaultwarden and why run it on a VPS?
Vaultwarden is an unofficial, open-source server compatible with the Bitwarden browser extensions and mobile apps. It uses very little memory, so a small VPS can serve a whole company.
Passwords are encrypted on the device before they reach the server. The server must use HTTPS for the apps to connect.
How to set up Vaultwarden on your VPS
- Order a VPS with Ubuntu or Debian.
- Install Docker.
- Run the Vaultwarden container with a data volume.
- Put Caddy or Nginx in front with an SSL certificate for your subdomain.
- Create your account, then turn off open sign-ups.
