The idea
Both a VPS (Virtual Private Server) and a VDS (Virtual Dedicated Server) are virtual servers. The words are often used in the same way, but they describe different setups.
VPS
A VPS server lets a provider create many virtual servers on one physical machine. Each virtual server has its own operating system, root access and a set share of CPU, RAM and disk. The resources of the machine are divided between many customers.
VDS
A VDS uses virtualization as well, but the resources of the physical server are given to one customer. It acts like a dedicated server with the flexibility of a virtual one: you get the full performance of the hardware, and you can still resize, copy or move it easily.
Main differences
| VPS | VDS | |
|---|---|---|
| Customers on the machine | Many | One |
| Resources | A share | The whole machine |
| Performance | Good, may be affected by neighbors | Very steady |
| Price | Lower | Higher |
| Best for | Websites, apps, development | Large projects, heavy workloads |
Which one to choose
- A VPS is the best price-to-power option for most projects. It gives dedicated resources and a lot of control at a much lower cost than a physical dedicated server.
- A VDS is for large projects that need the power of a full server but also the ease of a virtual one.
Check with your provider how it defines each product, because the names are not used in the same way everywhere.
Quick recap
- VPS: many virtual servers per machine. VDS: one virtual server per machine.
