The meaning
VPS stands for Virtual Private Server. It is a private server that is exclusively yours. You get a set amount of resources that you do not share with anyone. It is like having your own dedicated server, but virtual.
"Virtual" means that your server is a partition of a physical server. The partition is reserved for you.
What you can do with a VPS
- Get root access and full control.
- Install the operating system you prefer (Ubuntu, Debian, CentOS-compatible systems, Windows and more).
- Install any software and run your websites, apps, databases and tools.
- Add more resources when your project grows.
Who manages what
The hosting company takes care of the physical servers, the network, speed, uptime and stability. You focus on your project. With an unmanaged VPS you manage the operating system yourself. With a managed VPS the host helps with that too.
When to use a VPS
- Your website outgrew shared hosting.
- You need custom software or settings.
- You run an online shop, an app or an API.
- You want better security and isolation.
VPS and other hosting
- Shared hosting: cheaper, but you share the resources and have limited control.
- VPS: reserved resources and root access.
- Dedicated server: a whole physical machine for you.
Quick recap
- A VPS is a private, virtual server with reserved resources and full control.
