What is ionCube?
Some software makers lock their PHP code so nobody can copy it. This is called encoding. The ionCube Loader is a helper that lets the server read that locked code. Without it, you see errors like "The file was encoded with ionCube Loader and needs it installed".
Method 1: Use a phpinfo page
A phpinfo page prints your PHP settings in the browser.
- Log in to your hosting control panel and open File Manager.
- Go to
public_html. - Click + File and name it
info.php. - Right-click it, choose Edit, and paste:
<?php phpinfo(); ?> - Save the file.
- Open
https://yourdomain.com/info.phpin a browser. - Press Ctrl+F and search for
ionCube. - If you find a section with the loader version, it is installed.
- Delete
info.phpwhen done. It shows private details.
Method 2: Use SSH
SSH lets you type commands on the server. This method suits VPS and dedicated servers.
- Connect to the server with SSH.
- Run:
If ionCube is on, the output has a line like "with the ionCube PHP Loader".php -v
- You can also run:
This lists loaded PHP modules and picks out the ionCube line. If you seephp -m | grep -i ioncubethe ionCube PHP Loader, it is active.
Method 3: Use the control panel
Open Select PHP Version or a similar PHP tool. Look for ioncube or ioncube loader in the extension list. A ticked box means it is on.
If it is not installed
- On shared hosting, turn it on in the PHP extension list if it appears there. Otherwise ask Hostvento support.
- On a VPS, you can download the loader from the ionCube website and add it to your php.ini file. Back up the file first.
Tip: The loader must match your PHP version. After you change PHP versions, check again.
Quick recap
- ionCube Loader reads encoded PHP files.
- Check with a phpinfo page,
php -v, or your control panel. - Delete the phpinfo file afterwards.
- Ask support if it is missing.
