What is cache?
Cache is a store of temporary files. Apps keep them so they can open faster next time. Think of it like a pile of notes on your desk. Over time the pile gets big and some notes get old. Clearing the cache removes the pile. The app builds a fresh one. It does not delete your photos, messages or logins.
Menu names differ between phone makers such as Samsung, Xiaomi and Google Pixel. The steps below are close for most phones. If a name does not match, look for a similar one.
Clear the cache of one app
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap Apps. On some phones it is Apps & notifications or Manage apps.
- Tap the app that is giving trouble.
- Tap Storage. On some phones it is Storage & cache.
- Tap Clear cache.
Clear Chrome browser cache
- Open Chrome.
- Tap the three dots at the top right.
- Tap History, then Delete browsing data. On some versions it is under Settings, then Privacy and security.
- Choose a time range, such as All time.
- Tick Cached images and files.
- Leave Cookies unticked if you want to stay logged in.
- Tap Delete data.
Clear many apps at once
Older Android versions had a button for this under Settings, Storage, Cached data. Newer versions removed it. Some phones offer a cleaning tool in Device care or a similar menu. Use one only if you trust it.
When to do it
- Your phone is low on storage.
- An app freezes, crashes or shows old content.
- A website looks old in your browser.
Do not do it every day. Cache helps apps run faster. Clear it when you have a reason.
Quick recap
- Cache is temporary files that apps save to run faster.
- Go to Settings, Apps, pick an app, Storage, Clear cache.
- Do not pick Clear data by mistake.
- In Chrome, tick only Cached images and files.
