What is cache?
Cache is a store of temporary files. Instagram keeps small copies of photos and videos so your feed loads faster. Over time this store grows big. Clearing it removes the copies. The app downloads fresh ones. Your posts, followers and messages stay safe, because they live on Instagram's servers.
On Android
Android has a simple button for this.
- Open the phone Settings app.
- Tap Apps. On some phones it is Apps & notifications.
- Find and tap Instagram.
- Tap Storage.
- Tap Clear cache.
- Open Instagram again. It may load a little slower the first time.
Warning: Do not tap Clear data or Clear storage. That signs you out and resets the app.
On iPhone
iPhone has no cache button for single apps. You have two safe choices.
Option 1: Offload the app
Offloading removes the app but keeps its data. You reinstall it after.
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap iPhone Storage.
- Scroll down and tap Instagram.
- Tap Offload App and confirm.
- Tap Reinstall App.
Option 2: Delete and reinstall
- Make sure you know your Instagram username and password.
- Press and hold the Instagram icon, then choose Remove App and Delete App.
- Open the App Store, search for Instagram and install it again.
Menu names change between iOS versions. If you cannot find one, look for words like Storage.
Other quick fixes
- Update the app from the App Store or Google Play.
- Restart your phone.
- Check your internet connection.
Quick recap

- Android: Settings, Apps, Instagram, Storage, Clear cache.
