Clear the Cache on Your iPhone

This guide shows you how to clear saved files on an iPhone. It helps free space and can fix a slow browser or app.

How-To Guides2 min read14 steps

What is cache?

Cache is a store of temporary files. Apps and browsers keep copies of pictures and pages so things open faster. Over time the store grows large, and old copies can cause problems. Clearing it makes a fresh start. iPhone manages most system cache by itself. You can clear the browser cache and app data yourself.

Clear Safari

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Scroll down and tap Safari.
  3. Tap Clear History and Website Data.
  4. Tap Clear History and Data to confirm.

This removes history, cookies and cache. Cookies are small notes websites save, such as your login. You will need to sign in to sites again.

Clear Chrome on iPhone

  1. Open Chrome.
  2. Tap the three dots, then Settings.
  3. Tap Privacy and Security, then Clear Browsing Data.
  4. Tick Cached Images and Files.
  5. Tap Clear Browsing Data.

Clear an app

Most iPhone apps have no cache button. You can offload the app. This removes the app but keeps your data.

  1. Open Settings, then General, then iPhone Storage.
  2. Wait for the list to load.
  3. Tap the app you want.
  4. Tap Offload App and confirm.
  5. Tap Reinstall App.
Warning: Delete App removes the app and its data. Back up your iPhone first if the app holds anything you need. Use iCloud or a computer backup.

Free more space

  • Restart your iPhone. This clears some temporary files.
  • In iPhone Storage, read the suggestions and pick ones that suit you.
  • Delete big videos you no longer need, after saving them.

Menu names change between iOS versions. If one is missing, look for words like Storage or Website Data.

Quick recap

  • Safari: Settings, Safari, Clear History and Website Data.
  • Chrome has its own clear option in its settings.
  • For other apps, use Offload App in iPhone Storage.
  • Back up before you delete anything.
