What is Joomla?
Joomla is a program for building websites. It is a content management system, or CMS. A CMS lets you add pages and pictures without writing code. A user is a person who has an account on your site. Joomla 3 is an older version. Newer versions work in a similar way.
What is a user group?
Each user belongs to a group. The group decides what the person is allowed to do. It works like roles in a school play. A Registered user can log in. A Super User can control everything. Give people only the power they need.
Add a user
- Log in to your Joomla admin area. The address is usually your site name followed by
/administrator. - In the top menu, click Users, then Manage.
- Click the green New button.
- Fill in Name, Login Name, Password, and Email.
- Click the Assigned User Groups tab.
- Tick one group, such as Registered or Author.
- Click Save & Close.
Change a user
- Go to Users, then Manage.
- Click the name of the user.
- Change the details you want. You can fix the email, set a new password, or change the group.
- Click Save & Close.
Block or delete a user
To stop a person from logging in, tick the box by their name. Click Actions, then Block. This keeps the account but disables it.
Warning: Deleting a user cannot be undone. Content that they wrote may lose its author. Block the user instead if you are not sure.
If you lost access to the only admin account, open a support ticket with Hostvento.
Quick recap
- Use Users then Manage in the Joomla admin area.
- Click New to add a user and pick a group.
- Click a name to change details or the group.
- Block a user instead of deleting, when in doubt.
