What are user groups?
CMS Made Simple is a program for building websites. It has an admin area where editors log in. A group is a team of users who share the same rights. For example, an Editors group may write pages, and an Admins group may do everything. Instead of setting rights for each person, you place the person in a group. It is like giving a student a class badge.
These steps are for CMS Made Simple 2.x. Version 1.x has similar menus.
Before you start
The user and the group must exist. If not, create them first. For a group, go to Users & Groups and click Group Management, then Add New Group. For a user, use User Management, then Add New User.
Steps
- Log in to the CMS Made Simple admin area. Its address is often your site name followed by
/admin. - In the top menu, click Users & Groups.
- Click Users (or User Management).
- Find the person in the list.
- Click the user's name, or click the edit icon.
- Scroll to the part of the form that lists groups. It may be named Member of Group.
- Tick the box for each group the user should join.
- Untick any group the user should leave.
- Click Submit.
The user has the permissions of every group they belong to. If they belong to two groups, they get the rights of both.
Another way: from the group list
Some versions let you open Group Management and look at each group's members. If your version has an Assign Group or Group Assignment option under Users & Groups, use it. Pick a group and tick the users to add. Then click Submit.
Check the result
- Log out.
- Log in as that user.
- See which menu items appear. A user who sees too much or too little needs a different group or different group permissions.
Quick recap
- A group is a team of users with the same rights.
- Go to Users & Groups, then Users.
- Open the user, tick the groups and click Submit.
- Test by logging in as that user.
