What is MediaWiki?
MediaWiki is the free program behind Wikipedia. It builds wikis. A wiki is a website where many people can write and edit pages together.
Why do we say "move"?
In a wiki, the title is part of the page address. So renaming a page means moving it to a new name. MediaWiki also keeps the page history. The history is a list of all past edits, like a diary of the page.
MediaWiki can leave a redirect at the old name. A redirect is a signpost that sends visitors from the old name to the new one. This keeps old links working.
Before you start
- You must be logged in. On some wikis, only users with enough rights can move pages.
- Pick a new title that does not exist yet.
Steps
- Log in to your wiki.
- Open the page you want to rename.
- Find the More menu near the top. Some skins show Move as a tab. Click Move.
- In the form, find To new title. Type the new name.
- If the wiki allows it, choose the right namespace. A namespace is a section of the wiki, like folders. For normal pages, leave the default.
- Type a short reason in the Reason box.
- Keep Leave a redirect behind ticked, so old links still work.
- Tick Move associated talk page if you want the discussion page to move too.
- Click Move page.
You will see a message that the page was moved.
Fix links
Pages that point to the old name still work through the redirect. Later, you can edit them to point to the new name. Click What links here in the tools menu to find them.
If you cannot see Move, you may lack rights. Ask a wiki administrator, or open a support ticket with Hostvento.
Quick recap
- In MediaWiki, rename a page with Move.
- Type the new title and a reason.
- Leave a redirect so old links work.
- Click Move page.
