What are comments?
Drupal is a program for building websites. A comment is a short note a visitor writes under an article. Some sites like comments. Others get spam, which is unwanted junk messages, and prefer to turn them off.
Note: These steps are for Drupal 8, 9 and newer. Older Drupal 7 has the setting under the content type, in the tab named Comment settings.
Method 1: Close comments on one post
- Log in to Drupal as an administrator.
- Click Content in the top bar.
- Click Edit next to the post.
- Find the Comment settings box in the form.
- Choose Closed. Old comments stay visible but nobody can add new ones. Choose Hidden if you want to hide even the old ones.
- Click Save.
Method 2: Turn off comments for a whole content type
A content type is a kind of page, such as Article or Basic page.
- Click Structure, then Content types.
- Next to the type, click Manage fields.
- Find the row named Comments.
- Click the arrow next to Edit and choose Delete.
- Confirm by clicking Delete again.
Warning: This also deletes the comments that were already stored for that type. Take a backup of your site first.
If you want to keep old comments, use Manage display instead. Drag the Comments field to the Disabled area and click Save. The comments are then hidden but not deleted.
Method 3: Switch off the Comment module
A module is an add-on that gives Drupal a feature.
- Click Extend, then open the Uninstall tab.
- Tick Comment. Drupal may ask you to remove comment content first. Follow the message on screen.
- Click Uninstall.
This is the strongest choice. Use it only when you are sure.
Quick recap
- Comments are visitor notes under a post.
- Set Closed or Hidden on a single post.
- Use Manage fields or Manage display for a content type.
- Uninstall the Comment module to remove the feature everywhere.
- Back up first, because deleting a field deletes comments.
