What is e107?
A CMS, or content management system, is a program that lets you build and update a website from a web page, without coding. e107 is a free CMS. It is written in PHP, a language most web servers understand. It keeps its data in MySQL, which is a database. A database is like a filing cabinet that holds your articles and users.
What can it do?
- Publish news and articles.
- Let visitors sign up and log in.
- Run a forum, a download area and a chat area, using plugins. A plugin is an add-on that gives your site a new feature.
- Change the design with themes. A theme is a ready-made look for your site.
Install e107
- Download the e107 package from its official website.
- Log in to your hosting control panel.
- Create a new database and a database user. Write down the name, user and password.
- Unzip the package on your computer.
- Upload the files to your website folder using the file manager or FTP. FTP is a method to copy files to a server.
- Open your website address in a browser. The installer starts.
- Choose your language.
- Enter the database details from step 3.
- Pick an admin name, password and email address.
- Finish the installer.
- Delete the install file if the installer tells you to. This keeps strangers from running it again.
If your hosting has a one-click installer, e107 may be listed. Ask Hostvento support whether it is on your plan.
Log in to the admin area
Add /e107_admin/admin.php to your site address. Log in with the admin account. From there you can write news, manage users, install plugins and change themes.
