Show or hide the demo store notice in Magento 2

This guide shows how to turn the demo store banner on or off in your Magento 2 shop.

What is the demo store notice?

Magento is a program for running an online shop. The demo store notice is a thin bar across the top of every page. It says the store is a demo. You may want it while you build the shop, so visitors know orders are not real. When you are ready to sell, you turn it off.

Steps

  1. Log in to your Magento admin panel. This is the back office of the shop.
  2. Click Content in the left menu.
  3. Under Design, click Configuration.
  4. You will see a grid of rows. Each row is one level: Global, a website, or a store view. Find the row you want to change.
  5. In the Action column, click Edit.
  6. Open the section HTML Head.
  7. Scroll down to Display Demo Store Notice.
  8. If a box named Use Default Value is ticked, untick it. Otherwise the field is locked.
  9. Choose Yes to show the notice, or No to hide it.
  10. Click Save Configuration.
  11. Go to System, then Cache Management.
  12. Click Flush Magento Cache.

Open your shop in a browser and reload. The bar should now be on or off, as you chose.

Why store views matter

Magento can have more than one website or store view, such as one for each language. A setting on Global is passed down to the others. A setting on a single store view only changes that view. If the bar will not go away, check the other rows in the grid. A lower level may still have its own value set to Yes.

If it still shows

  • Flush the cache again.
  • Clear your browser cache or try a private window.
  • If you use Varnish or another page cache, clear that too. Ask Hostvento support if you are not sure.
Tip: Magento 1 had this option under System, Configuration, Design, HTML Head. Magento 2 moved it to Content, Design, Configuration.

Quick recap

  • The demo store notice is a bar saying the shop is a demo.
  • Find it under Content, Design, Configuration, then HTML Head.
  • Set Display Demo Store Notice to Yes or No.
  • Save and flush the cache.
