What is a wiki page?
MediaWiki is the program behind Wikipedia. A wiki is a website where people can write and edit pages together. Every page has a title, and the title is part of its web address. You make a new page by giving it a title and then typing text.
Method 1: Use the search box
- Log in to your wiki.
- Click the search box.
- Type the title you want, for example Garden Tools.
- Press Enter.
- If the page does not exist, you see a message with a red link that says create the page. Click it.
- Type your text in the editing box.
- Click Save page.
Method 2: Use a red link
A link in the wiki can point to a page that does not exist yet. These links are red.
- Open any page and click Edit.
- Type a link in double square brackets, like this:
[[Garden Tools]]
This makes a link to a page called Garden Tools.
- Click Save page.
- The link shows in red. Click it. The editor for the new page opens.
- Write your text and click Save page.
Method 3: Type the address
- Click in your browser address bar.
- Type your wiki address, then
/index.php?title=Garden_Tools&action=edit. - Press Enter. The editor opens.
- Write your text and click Save page.
Use underscores in place of spaces in the address. Page names are case-sensitive after the first letter, so Garden tools and Garden Tools are two different pages.
Put your page in a category
A category groups related pages. At the bottom of the page text, add this line:
[[Category:Tools]]
MediaWiki then lists the page in the Tools category.
Quick recap
- A new page needs a title.
- Search for the title and click create the page.
- Or add a
[[Page Name]]link and click the red link. - Always click Save page.
- Add a
[[Category:Name]]line to group pages.
