Set group permissions in CMS Made Simple

This guide shows how to choose what each user group may do in CMS Made Simple.

What are group permissions?

CMS Made Simple is a program for building websites. A group is a team of users, like Editors or Admins. A permission is a right to do one thing, such as add a page, edit a template or change users. When you give a permission to a group, every member gets it. Think of keys on a key ring. Each group has its own ring.

These steps are for version 2.x. Version 1.x looks alike.

Be careful: Some permissions are powerful. Do not give them to people you do not trust. A wrong choice can let someone break your site. Write down the old settings before you change them.

Steps

  1. Log in to the CMS Made Simple admin area. Its address is often your site name followed by /admin.
  2. Click Users & Groups in the top menu.
  3. Click Group Permissions. A big table opens.
  4. Look at the table. Each row is a permission. Each column is a group.
  5. Find the column of the group you want to change.
  6. Tick a box to give that group the permission in that row.
  7. Untick a box to take it away.
  8. Scroll to the bottom and click Submit.

Your changes take effect the next time the group's members load a page in the admin area.

Useful permissions to know

  • Add Pages lets users create new pages.
  • Modify Any Page lets users edit pages made by others.
  • Remove Pages lets users delete pages.
  • Manage Stylesheets and Manage Templates let users change the look of the site.
  • Manage Users and Manage Groups let users control accounts. Keep these for admins.
  • Modify Site Preferences lets users change the main settings.

The list can differ if you installed extra modules, because modules add their own permissions.

Test your change

  1. Create a test user and put it in the group. See the guide on adding users to groups.
  2. Log in as the test user in a private browser window.
  3. Check that they can do the right things, and nothing more.

Quick recap

  • A permission is a right. A group collects users who share rights.
  • Open Users & Groups, then Group Permissions.
  • Tick or untick boxes in the group's column.
  • Click Submit.
  • Test with a test user.
