What is MediaWiki?
MediaWiki is free software for building a wiki. A wiki is a website where many people can write and edit pages together. Wikipedia runs on MediaWiki.
Why does the version matter?
Software gets new releases over time. Each release has a number, like 1.39.2. Newer releases fix bugs and security holes. Add-ons also need a matching version to work. Knowing your number helps you decide if an update is due.
Method 1: Use the Version page
This is the easiest way. You do not need to log in.
- Open your web browser.
- Type your wiki address, then add
/index.php?title=Special:Versionat the end. - Press Enter.
- Look at the table called Installed software.
- Find the row named MediaWiki. The number next to it is your version.
On many wikis you can also type Special:Version into the search box on the site.
The same page also shows your PHP version and your database version. It lists your installed extensions too. An extension is a small add-on that gives the wiki a new feature.
Method 2: Look at the files
Use this if the wiki shows an error and the page will not open.
- Log in to your Hostvento client area at https://secure.hostvento.com/clientarea.php.
- Open your hosting control panel from the Services menu.
- Open File Manager. This is a tool that lets you see the files of your website.
- Go to the folder where MediaWiki is installed.
- Open the file named
includes/Defines.phpand look for the line withMW_VERSION. In older releases, look inincludes/DefaultSettings.phpfor$wgVersion.
The number on that line is the version. Do not change anything in the file. Just read it and close it.
Quick recap
- Open
Special:Versionon your wiki to see the version. - Look for the MediaWiki row in the Installed software table.
- If the site is broken, read the version from the files with File Manager.
- Do not edit those files.
