This guide shows you how to make a new user group in Joomla and then put users into it.

What is a user group?

A user group is a team of people on your site. Think of a school. Students, teachers and the principal each have different keys. Each group has its own rights, called permissions. A permission says what a person may do, such as read, write or delete.

Joomla already has some groups, like Registered, Author, Editor and Administrator. You can add your own.

Steps to create a group

  1. Log in to the Joomla administrator area. The address is usually your site name plus /administrator.
  2. In the top or left menu, click Users.
  3. Click Groups.
  4. Click the New button.
  5. Next to Group Title, type a name, for example "Shop Staff".
  6. Next to Group Parent, choose an existing group. The new group copies the rights of its parent. If you are not sure, pick Registered. It has few rights, so it is safe.
  7. Click Save & Close.

Your group now shows in the list.

Put a user in the group

  1. Go to Users, then Manage.
  2. Click the name of the user.
  3. Open the Assigned User Groups tab.
  4. Tick your new group.
  5. Click Save & Close.

Give the group its rights

A new group only has the rights it gets from its parent. To change that, open System, then Global Configuration, then the Permissions tab. Click your group name. Choose Allowed or Denied for each action. Then click Save.

You can also control who sees what with Access Levels. These are under Users too. An access level decides which groups can view a menu item or an article.

Tip: Be careful with the Super Users group. Members of it can do anything on your site. Do not give it to people you do not trust. Joomla menus differ a little between versions, but the steps are similar.
