This guide shows you how to set up the Mambo website software on your hosting account with a few clicks.

Tip: Mambo is old software and is not updated much any more. Newer systems like WordPress or Joomla are used more today, but the install steps are the same style.

What are Mambo and Softaculous?

Mambo is a CMS (content management system). A CMS lets you add pages and news to a website from a web form. Joomla started as a copy of Mambo, so the two look alike.

Softaculous is an app installer. It works like an app store for your hosting. It puts the files in place and builds the database. Ask Hostvento support if Softaculous is on your plan.

Steps

  1. Log in to your hosting control panel. The login is in your welcome email. You can reach your services from https://secure.hostvento.com/clientarea.php.
  2. Click Softaculous Apps Installer.
  3. Type Mambo in the search box.
  4. Click Mambo in the results.
  5. Click Install Now.
  6. Choose the protocol. Use https:// if your site has an SSL certificate, which keeps the visit private. If not, use http://.
  7. Choose your domain name.
  8. In In Directory, leave the box empty for the main address. Type a folder name to put Mambo in a sub-folder.
  9. Type the Site Name.
  10. Under Admin Account, choose an admin username and a strong password. Add your email address.
  11. Click Install.
  12. Wait for it to finish. Softaculous shows the link to your site and to the admin area.
Warning: Installing into a folder that already holds a site may overwrite its files. Take a backup first.

Log in to the admin area

  1. Open the admin link Softaculous gave you. Or type your site address followed by /administrator.
  2. Type your admin username and password.
  3. Click Login.

From here you can add content, change menus and install add-ons.

Keep it safe

Old software gets fewer security fixes. Use a strong password. Take regular backups. Do not install add-ons from unknown places.

Quick recap

  • Mambo is an older CMS.
  • Open Softaculous, search for Mambo, click Install Now.
  • Choose the domain, folder and admin account.
  • Click Install.
  • Log in at /administrator.
  • Back up often, because old software is less safe.
