What is a user group?
b2evolution is software for running blogs and community sites. A user group is a team of people who share the same rights. A right, also called a permission, says what a person may do. For example, a group may be allowed to write posts but not to change settings. It is like school roles. Pupils, teachers and the head teacher each have different keys.
The menu names below follow the common b2evolution layout. They can differ a little in your version.
Open the group list
- Log in to the b2evolution admin area. The address is usually your site plus
/login.php. - Click Back-office if you see the front page of your site.
- Click Users in the top menu.
- Click Groups (it may sit under a User Groups tab).
You see the groups that exist already, such as Administrators, Moderators, Trusted Users and Normal Users.
Create a new group
- On the group list, click New group.
- Type a Name, for example "Writers".
- Choose permissions. Tick what the group may do, like access to the back-office, or the right to edit posts and users.
- Click Save.
Change a group
- On the group list, click the name of the group.
- Change the name or permissions.
- Click Save.
Move a user to another group
- Go to Users, then the list of users.
- Click the user's name, or the edit icon.
- Find the User group drop-down menu.
- Choose the new group.
- Click Save.
Delete a group
Warning: You can only delete a group that has no users. Move the users first. Take a backup before deleting anything.
- Go to the group list.
- Click the delete icon next to the group.
- Confirm the choice.
Tip: Give each group the fewest rights it needs. A group with too many rights is a risk if one account is stolen. Blog-level rights can also be set in each blog's Permissions tab.
