What is a Drupal module?
Drupal is a free tool for building websites. A module is a small add-on that gives the site a new feature. Think of it like a new attachment for a toy: the toy stays the same, but it can do more.
Some modules come with Drupal. These are called core modules. Others you download. These are called contributed modules.
Before you start
Take a backup of your files and database first. A faulty module can break your site. Test new modules on a copy of the site if you can.
Steps: install a module from the admin screen
- Log in to your Drupal admin area.
- Download the module from the official Drupal website. You get a file that ends in
.tar.gzor.zip. - In the top menu, click Extend.
- Click Install new module. If you do not see this button, the Update Manager module is off. Switch it on in the same Extend list first.
- Click Choose File, pick the module file, then click Install.
Tip: Newer Drupal versions prefer a tool called Composer for adding modules. Ask Hostvento support if you need help with it. The admin screen method is for older versions, but menus look much the same.
Steps: switch a module on
- Click Extend in the top menu.
- Use the search box to find your module.
- Tick the box next to its name.
- Scroll down and click Install.
- If Drupal asks to switch on other modules it needs, click Continue.
Steps: switch a module off and remove it
Warning: removing a module may delete the data it stored. Back up first.
- Click Extend, then open the Uninstall tab.
- Tick the module you want to remove.
- Click Uninstall, then confirm.
- After that, delete the module folder from your site files. It lives inside the
modulesfolder. You can do this with the File Manager in your control panel.
Keep modules up to date
Click Reports, then Available updates. Drupal lists modules that have new versions. Updates fix bugs and close security holes.
Quick recap
- A module adds a feature to Drupal.
- Use Extend to install and switch modules on.
