Install Modules and Extensions in Magento 1.x

This guide shows you how to add new features to an online shop that runs Magento 1.x.

What is a Magento extension?

Magento is a free tool for building online shops. An extension, also called a module, is an add-on. It adds a feature, like a new payment choice or a better search box. It is like adding a new shelf to a shop.

Tip: Magento 1.x is old software. It no longer gets updates, so it can be risky. Newer Magento versions work in a similar way, but use a different install method.

Before you start

Warning: a new extension can break your shop. Take a full backup of your files and database first. Test on a copy of the shop if you can.

Method 1: Magento Connect

Magento Connect was the old built-in store for extensions. It has been closed down, so this works only for extensions you already have a key for. Many people now use the manual method below.

  1. Log in to the Magento admin panel.
  2. Go to System, then Magento Connect, then Magento Connect Manager.
  3. Log in again with your admin details.
  4. Paste the extension key into the box under Install New Extensions.
  5. Click Install, then click Proceed.
  6. Wait for the message that says the install is done.

Method 2: upload the files yourself

  1. Download the extension ZIP file and unzip it on your computer.
  2. Log in to your hosting control panel and open File Manager. You can use FTP instead if you like.
  3. Go to the folder where Magento is installed.
  4. Upload the extension files. Keep the folder layout the same. The folders usually match Magento's own names, such as app, skin and js.
  5. Go to the Magento admin panel.
  6. Click System, then Cache Management.
  7. Click Flush Magento Cache. Cache is saved copies of pages. Clearing it makes Magento see the new files.
  8. Log out of the admin panel and log back in.

Check that it works

Go to System, then Configuration. Look for the new extension in the left menu. Also open System, then Configuration, then Advanced, and find the module name in the list.

Quick recap

  • An extension adds a feature to your shop.
  • Back up before you install anything.
  • Install with Magento Connect or upload the files by hand.
  • Flush the cache, then log out and in again.
