Set a Static Front Page in WordPress

This guide shows you how to make a fixed page, like a welcome page, the first thing people see on your WordPress site.

What is a static front page?

The front page is your home page. It is the first page people see when they type your website name.

By default, WordPress shows your newest blog posts there. That page changes each time you post. A static front page does not change by itself. It stays the same until you edit it. It works like the front door of a shop. Your blog can then live on a different page.

Before you start

You need two pages. One will be your front page. The other will hold your blog posts. If you do not have them yet, make them first.

Step 1: create the two pages

  1. Log in to your WordPress dashboard. The address is your site name plus /wp-admin.
  2. In the left menu, click Pages, then Add New.
  3. Type the title Home. Add any text you want visitors to see first.
  4. Click Publish.
  5. Click Add New again. Type the title Blog. Leave the page empty.
  6. Click Publish.

Step 2: set the front page

  1. In the left menu, click Settings, then Reading.
  2. Next to Your homepage displays, pick A static page.
  3. In the Homepage list, choose the Home page.
  4. In the Posts page list, choose the Blog page.
  5. Click Save Changes.
  6. Open your site in a new tab to see the result.
Tip: In newer block themes you can also do this in Appearance, then Editor. The Settings, Reading way works on almost every site.

Add the Blog page to your menu

  1. Click Appearance, then Menus.
  2. Tick the Blog page in the list on the left.
  3. Click Add to Menu, then Save Menu.

Some themes use the Editor for menus instead. Look for Navigation there.

Go back to the old setup

Go to Settings, Reading. Choose Your latest posts and save. Your pages are not deleted.
