Fix Errors When Installing Drupal Modules

Drupal sometimes refuses to install a module. This guide lists the common causes and how to fix each one.

What is a module?

Drupal is a CMS, a program for building websites. A module is an add-on that gives it a new skill, like a contact form or a gallery. You can install modules from the admin area or upload them by hand.

Warning: Back up your files and database before you install or fix anything.

Cause 1: The folder cannot be written to

Drupal needs to save new files. If a folder is locked, you may see a message about permissions.

  1. Log in to cPanel and open File Manager.
  2. Find the folder sites/default/files.
  3. Right-click it and choose Change Permissions.
  4. Set it to 755. Use 775 only if support tells you to.
  5. Try the install again.

Cause 2: The upload is too big or takes too long

Servers limit file size and run time. A big module can hit those limits. Upload the module by hand instead.

  1. Download the module ZIP from drupal.org on your computer.
  2. Unzip it.
  3. In File Manager, open modules. Create a folder named contrib inside it if it does not exist.
  4. Upload the unzipped module folder there. You can upload the ZIP and use Extract.
  5. Go to Extend in Drupal. Tick the module and click Install.

On Drupal 7 the folder is sites/all/modules and the menu is Modules.

Cause 3: Wrong version

A module made for Drupal 7 will not work on Drupal 10. Check the module page. Choose a release that matches your Drupal version. Also check the PHP version it needs.

Cause 4: A needed module is missing

Some modules need other modules first. Drupal lists them as dependencies. Install the missing ones, then try again.

Cause 5: Not enough memory

You may see a white page or a message about memory. PHP has a memory limit. Ask Hostvento support to raise it, or open Select PHP Version or MultiPHP INI Editor in cPanel if you have it, and raise memory_limit.

Cause 6: Broken cache

  1. Go to Configuration, Development, Performance.
  2. Click Clear all caches.
Tip: Read the exact error text. It often names the file or setting that is the problem. Show it to Hostvento support if you need help.

Quick recap

  • Check folder permissions first.
  • Upload large modules by hand.
  • Match the module to your Drupal and PHP version.
  • Install required modules first.
  • Raise memory or clear caches if needed.
