What is Subrion?
A CMS (content management system) is a program that lets you build and edit a website without much code. Subrion is a CMS written in PHP. PHP is a language that web servers can run.
Subrion is often used for listing sites. These include business directories, classified ads, and article sites. Visitors can submit entries, and you can approve them.
What can it do?
- Create and manage listings and categories
- Let members register and post
- Add extra features with plugins (small add-ons)
- Change the look with templates (ready-made designs)
- Help with search engine basics, such as page titles
What you need
- A hosting account that runs PHP and MySQL. MySQL is a database system where your content is kept.
- The Subrion ZIP file from its official site.
- Your cPanel login from your welcome email.
Ask Hostvento support whether your plan has a one-click installer for Subrion.
Steps to install
- Download the ZIP file from the official website.
- In cPanel, open MySQL Databases.
- Create a database and a user. Add the user to the database with All Privileges.
- Write down the database name, user name and password.
- Open File Manager and go to
public_html. - Click Upload and add the ZIP file.
- Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract.
- If the files sit inside a folder, move them up into
public_html. - Open your domain in a browser. The installer should start.
- Click through the steps. The installer checks your server and the folder permissions.
- Type your database details.
- Set the admin name, a strong password and your email.
- Finish the install.
After install
- Delete the
installfolder if the installer did not remove it. - Log in to the admin area. The address is shown on the last page of the installer.
- Choose a template and add your categories.
Warning: Leaving the install folder in place is a security risk. Remove it.
Tip: Take a backup before you add plugins or update Subrion.
