What is WebsiteBaker?

A CMS (content management system) is a program that lets you build and edit a website without much code. WebsiteBaker is a light CMS written in PHP. PHP is a language that web servers run. It is made for small sites that need to be easy to manage.

It has been replaced by a newer project called WBCE CMS, which is based on it. The steps in this guide work in a similar way for both.

What can it do?

  • Create pages in a tree with menus
  • Edit pages with a visual editor, like a word processor
  • Add modules for galleries, forms and news. A module is a small add-on.
  • Change the look with templates, which are ready-made designs
  • Set several users with different rights

What you need

  • Hosting with PHP and a MySQL database. A database is where the site stores its content.
  • The ZIP file from the project's official website.
  • Your cPanel login from your welcome email.

An old release may not run on the newest PHP. If you get errors, ask Hostvento support which PHP versions are available.

Steps to install

  1. Download the ZIP file from the official site.
  2. In cPanel, open MySQL Databases.
  3. Create a database and a user. Add the user to the database with All Privileges.
  4. Note the database name, user name and password.
  5. Open File Manager and go to public_html.
  6. Upload the ZIP file. Right-click it and choose Extract.
  7. If the files are in a subfolder, move them up into public_html.
  8. Open yourdomain.com/install/ in your browser. The installer starts.
  9. Check that the requirement list shows no problems.
  10. Choose the URL, language and time zone.
  11. Enter your database details.
  12. Set an admin name, email and strong password.
  13. Click Install WebsiteBaker.

After you install

  1. Delete the install folder in File Manager.
  2. Log in at yourdomain.com/admin.
  3. Open Pages to add your first page.

Warning: Leaving the install folder on your site is a security risk.

Tip: Always back up before you add modules or upgrade.

Quick recap

  • WebsiteBaker is a light PHP CMS, now continued as WBCE CMS.
  • Create a database, upload and extract the ZIP.
  • Run the installer in your browser.
  • Delete the install folder afterwards.
