Tools You Can Use with MS SQL Server

This guide lists the main free and paid tools for working with MS SQL Server, and what each one is good for.

What is MS SQL Server?

MS SQL Server is a database system from Microsoft. A database is a place where apps keep their information in an organised way. On its own it has no buttons or windows. You use extra tools to look inside it and manage it.

SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS)

SSMS is the best-known tool. It is free and runs on Windows. It gives you a point-and-click view of your databases.

  • Browse tables and see their columns.
  • Write and run SQL queries. A query is a question or command you send to the database.
  • Create backups and restore them.
  • Manage users and what they may do.

Azure Data Studio

This is a lighter, modern tool. It is free and runs on Windows, Mac and Linux. It is good for writing queries and looking at results in charts. It has fewer admin features than SSMS.

sqlcmd

sqlcmd is a command-line tool. A command line is a screen where you type instructions instead of clicking. It is handy for scripts and for servers with no screen.

sqlcmd -S localhost -U sa -P "YourPassword"

This connects to the local server as the sa user. Replace the password with your own.

SQL Server Configuration Manager

This tool changes how the server itself runs. You can start or stop the service, turn network protocols on or off, and change the port.

SQL Server Profiler and Extended Events

These tools watch what the server is doing. They help you find slow queries. Extended Events is the newer and lighter choice.

SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT)

SSDT works inside Visual Studio. Developers use it to design databases and keep the design in version control.

Third-party tools

Other companies also make tools, such as DBeaver (free) and Redgate tools (paid). They can help with comparing databases and moving data. If you want to use one on a Hostvento server, ask support whether your plan allows it.

How to choose

  1. New to SQL Server on Windows? Start with SSMS.
  2. On Mac or Linux? Try Azure Data Studio.
  3. Need to automate tasks? Use sqlcmd.
  4. Need to change ports or start the service? Use Configuration Manager.
Tip: Always take a backup before you run a command that changes or deletes data.

Quick recap

  • SSMS is the main free tool for managing SQL Server.
  • Azure Data Studio works on Windows, Mac and Linux.
  • sqlcmd lets you run commands from a text screen.
  • Configuration Manager controls the service and network settings.
  • Profiler and Extended Events help you find slow queries.
