What is a MySQL database?
A database is a place where your website keeps its information, such as posts, users and orders. MySQL is one of the most popular database programs. Apps like WordPress use it.
cPanel is the control panel for your hosting account. It is a web page full of icons for managing your site. You find your cPanel login link in your Hostvento welcome email, or in the client area at https://secure.hostvento.com/clientarea.php.
Step 1: Create the database
- Log in to cPanel.
- Find the Databases section and click MySQL Databases.
- Under Create New Database, type a name.
- Click Create Database.
cPanel adds your account name at the start, for example account_shop. Write down the full name.
Step 2: Create a database user
A database user is a login name that lets an app open the database. It is like a key to a room.
- Scroll to MySQL Users and Add New User.
- Type a username.
- Type a password, or click Password Generator for a strong one.
- Click Create User.
Save the password somewhere safe. The app will need it.
Step 3: Connect the user to the database
- Scroll to Add User To Database.
- Pick the user from the first list.
- Pick the database from the second list.
- Click Add.
- Tick All Privileges. Privileges are the actions the user may do.
- Click Make Changes.
Use the details in your app
Your app, such as a WordPress config file, usually asks for four things:
- Database name (the full name with the prefix)
- Database username (also with the prefix)
- The password you set
- Host, which is normally
localhost
Other things you can do on this page
- Check Database and Repair Database to fix small problems.
- Rename or Delete a database.
- Change Password for a user.
Quick recap
- Open MySQL Databases in cPanel.
- Create the database, then create a user.
- Add the user to the database with All Privileges.
- Use the full names and the password in your app. Host is usually
localhost. - Always back up before deleting.
