The short answer
MS SQL Server is a database program made by Microsoft. A database is a place where information is stored in an organised way. Think of a giant set of spreadsheets that apps can read and change in a fraction of a second.
Websites, shops, schools and banks use databases to keep records such as customers, orders and messages.
How it works
- Data is saved in tables. A table has rows and columns, like a spreadsheet.
- You talk to it with a language called SQL. SQL stands for Structured Query Language.
- A query is one question or command. For example, "show me all orders from today".
Microsoft has its own version of SQL called T-SQL. It adds extra tools such as variables and loops.
What it can do
- Store large amounts of data safely.
- Let many users and apps work at the same time.
- Make backups and restore them.
- Protect data with user logins and permissions.
- Build reports and analyse data.
Where it runs
SQL Server first ran only on Windows. Newer versions also run on Linux. Many Windows-based hosting plans and apps built with ASP.NET use it. Whether your Hostvento plan includes it is something to ask support.
Editions
- Express: free, with size limits. Good for learning.
- Developer: free for building and testing.
- Standard and Enterprise: paid editions with more features and no small limits.
How it differs from MySQL
| Point | MS SQL Server | MySQL |
|---|---|---|
| Made by | Microsoft | Oracle, with an open-source version |
| Language flavour | T-SQL | MySQL SQL |
| Works well with | ASP.NET and Windows tools | PHP and WordPress |
| Cost | Free and paid editions | Free and paid editions |
Both are good. Pick the one your app needs. WordPress needs MySQL or MariaDB. Many .NET apps expect SQL Server.
How to try it
- Download the Express or Developer edition from Microsoft's website.
- Install it.
- Install SQL Server Management Studio, a free tool for working with databases.
- Connect to your server and create a first database.
Quick recap
- MS SQL Server is Microsoft's database program.
- It stores data in tables and uses SQL queries.
- It runs on Windows and newer versions run on Linux.
- Express is free for learning and small apps.
- Choose it when your app is built for it, such as many .NET apps.
