Note: Installing software needs root access, which is full control of the server. It is for VPS and dedicated server owners.
What is MPlayer?
MPlayer is a free program that plays and reads video and audio files. On a web server, it is not for watching videos. Some websites use it to work with video files. For example, a video-sharing script may call it to read details about an uploaded video.
SSH is a way to type commands on your server from your own computer. You use it for all checks below.
Method 1: Ask where it is
- Connect to your server with SSH.
- Run this command.
which mplayer
If MPlayer is installed, it prints the file path, such as /usr/bin/mplayer. If nothing prints, it is not installed or not in the search path.
Method 2: Ask for the version
mplayer -v
This starts MPlayer and prints its version. If you see "command not found", it is missing.
Method 3: Ask the package manager
A package manager is the tool that installs and tracks software on Linux.
On CentOS, AlmaLinux or Rocky Linux:
rpm -qa | grep -i mplayer
This lists installed packages that have "mplayer" in the name.
On Ubuntu or Debian:
dpkg -l | grep -i mplayer
This does the same on Debian-style systems.
Install it if missing
On Ubuntu or Debian:
apt-get update
apt-get install mplayer
On CentOS-type systems, MPlayer is not in the standard list. You often have to enable an extra software source first. Ask Hostvento support if you need advice on a safe source.
Warning: Add outside software sources only if you trust them. Take a backup or snapshot of your server first.
