Turn On Push Mail Notifications on an iPhone or iPad

Get new emails the moment they arrive on your iOS device.

Email2 min read6 steps

Before you start

Push needs support on the mail server. If iOS Mail Push is turned on in WHM for your server, your server can push new-mail alerts to your iPhone or iPad. Ask Hostvento support if you are not sure that it is on for your plan.

Turn on Push

  1. Tap Settings on the Home screen.
  2. Scroll down and tap Mail, then Accounts (on older iOS versions: Accounts & Passwords).
  3. Tap Fetch New Data.
  4. Find the switch Push. It is green when it is on. If it is not green, tap it.
  5. Scroll down to the list of accounts and tap your mail account.
  6. Under Select Schedule, a check mark shows the active schedule. Tap Push.

Restart the Mail app

After you turn on Push, close the Mail app and open it again.

To close an app on an iPhone or iPad with a Home button: double-press the Home button and swipe the Mail app up.

On a device without a Home button: swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause in the middle. Then swipe the Mail app up.

If you do not get notifications

  • Check Settings, then Notifications, then Mail. Make sure notifications are allowed for the account.
  • Check that Do Not Disturb or a Focus mode is off.
  • Check the connection of the device.
  • Remove the account and add it again.
  • If it still fails, the mail server may not support Push. Choose Fetch with a short interval (for example every 15 minutes).

Quick recap

  • Settings, Mail, Accounts, Fetch New Data, switch on Push.
  • Set the account to Push and restart the Mail app.
  • Use Fetch if the server does not support Push.
