What is an IP address?
An IP address is a number that identifies a device or connection on the internet. It is like a home address for your computer. An example is 203.0.113.25.
What are a whitelist and a blacklist?
A whitelist is a list of addresses that are always allowed. Many tools now call it an "allow list".
A blacklist is a list of addresses that are always blocked. Many tools call it a "block list" or "deny list".
A WAF is a Web Application Firewall. It guards your website. IP rules tell the WAF who may pass and who may not.
When to use each one
- Allow: your own office or home, so the WAF never blocks you by mistake.
- Allow: a service that must reach your site, such as a payment company.
- Block: an address that keeps trying to break in or floods your site.
Steps
- Find the IP address you want to add. To find your own, search for "what is my IP" in your browser.
- For an attacker, find the address in your WAF log or access log.
- Open your WAF dashboard. Ask Hostvento support where it is if you are not sure. You can open a support ticket.
- Look for a menu named IP Access, IP Rules, Allow List or similar. The exact name differs between tools.
- Click Add.
- Type the IP address.
- Choose the action: Allow or Block.
- Add a short note, such as "Office" or "Spam bot". This helps you remember later.
- Click Save.
- Test the rule. Visit your site from the allowed or blocked address and check the result.
Blocking a whole range
Some tools accept a range written like 203.0.113.0/24. The part after the slash tells how many addresses are covered. Be careful. A range can block many innocent visitors.
Home internet addresses often change. If your allowed address changes, update the list.
Quick recap
- A whitelist allows addresses. A blacklist blocks them.
- Allow your own address and trusted services.
- Block addresses that attack or flood your site.
- Add a note to every rule.
- Test the rule after saving.
