This guide shows how to add Apache Tomcat 8.5 to a cPanel server and turn it on for an account. It needs root access to a VPS or dedicated server.

What is ea-Tomcat85?

Tomcat is software that runs Java web applications. ea-tomcat85 is the name of the Tomcat 8.5 package for EasyApache 4. EasyApache 4 is the tool on WHM servers that installs web server parts. WHM is the admin panel for the whole server.

Tip: Tomcat 8.5 is old now. Newer versions install in a similar way, with a different package name.

Warning: Take a server backup before you install new software. Ask Hostvento support if Tomcat is allowed on your plan.

Install the package

  1. Log in to WHM as root.
  2. Type EasyApache 4 in the search box and open it.
  3. Click Customize under your current profile.
  4. Click Apache Modules and look for mod_proxy and mod_proxy_ajp. Turn them on.
  5. Click Additional Packages.
  6. Search for tomcat. Turn on ea-tomcat85.
  7. Also pick a Java package such as ea-java, if one is listed.
  8. Click Next until you reach the review page.
  9. Click Provision and wait until it finishes.

Or use the command line

yum install ea-tomcat85

This installs the package on older cPanel systems. On newer ones the command may be dnf install ea-tomcat85.

Turn Tomcat on for an account

  1. Log in to the user's cPanel.
  2. Find Software and open Setup Tomcat (or similar). This option is shown only when Tomcat is installed.
  3. Click Create to make a Tomcat instance for that account.
  4. Choose to start it.

The account then gets its own Tomcat. Put your app (a .war file) in the account's webapps folder. A WAR file is a packed Java web app.

Settings you may change

  • The Java memory size, in the Tomcat start settings.
  • The ports for HTTP and AJP. AJP is a link between Apache and Tomcat.
  • Which web addresses go to Tomcat.

Check it

systemctl status ea-tomcat85

This shows if the service is running. On some setups, the service runs per account, so the name can differ.

Tip: If your app is not found, check the logs in the Tomcat logs folder.

Quick recap

  • ea-Tomcat85 is the Tomcat 8.5 package for EasyApache 4.
  • Add it under Additional Packages and provision.
  • Enable the proxy modules.
  • Set up Tomcat for each account and deploy a WAR file.
