What is a currency setting?
PrestaShop is free software for running an online shop. A currency is the money type used for prices, such as dollars or euros. When you add one, customers can pick it, and PrestaShop works out the new price using an exchange rate. An exchange rate tells you how much one money type is worth in another.
These steps follow PrestaShop 1.7 and 8. Menus may differ in other versions.
Steps
- Log in to your PrestaShop admin panel.
- Click International in the left menu.
- Click Localization.
- Click Currencies.
- Click Add new currency.
- Pick the currency from the drop-down list. Start typing its name to search.
- Set the Exchange rate. This is how much one unit of your default currency is worth in the new one.
- Set the status to Enabled.
- Choose the shops it applies to, if you run more than one.
- Click Save.
If your version offers a list of currencies to import, you can pick the one you need and click the import button instead.
Update exchange rates
Exchange rates move all the time. You can update them by hand or by pulling live values.
- Go to International, then Localization, then Currencies.
- Scroll to the Currency rates section if your version has one.
- Click Update currency rates.
You can also edit a rate by hand. Click Edit next to the currency and change the number.
Check your shop
- Open your shop as a customer.
- Look for the currency selector at the top of the page.
- Pick the new currency and see that prices change.
- Try adding a product to the cart.
Make sure payments work
Payment modules may only accept certain currencies. Go to Payment, then Preferences. Under Currency restrictions, tick the new currency for each payment method that supports it.
Quick recap
- Go to International, Localization, Currencies and click Add new currency.
- Pick the currency, set the rate and enable it.
- Keep exchange rates fresh.
- Allow the currency in your payment methods.
