Add Product Categories in OpenCart

This guide shows how to create categories in OpenCart so your products are neat and easy to find.

What is a category?

A category is a group of products that belong together. In a supermarket, the milk sits in the dairy aisle. Your online store works the same way. A category can also have sub-categories, like "Phones" inside "Electronics".

Steps

  1. Log in to your OpenCart admin area.
  2. In the left menu, click Catalog.
  3. Click Categories.
  4. Click the blue Add New button (a plus sign) at the top right.
  5. On the General tab, type the Category Name. For example, "Electronics".
  6. Write a short text in the Description box if you like.
  7. Type a Meta Tag Title. Search engines show this title in their results. You can use the same words as the name.
  8. Click the Data tab.
  9. For a main category, leave Parent empty. For a sub-category, start typing the parent name and pick it from the list.
  10. Choose an Image if you want one.
  11. Tick Top if you want the category in the main menu bar at the top of the store.
  12. Set Status to Enabled.
  13. Open the SEO tab and add a keyword like electronics if you use clean web addresses. It must be unique.
  14. Click the blue Save button.

Put a product in the category

  1. Go to Catalog, then Products.
  2. Click the pencil to edit a product.
  3. Open the Links tab.
  4. In the Categories box, start typing the category name. Pick it from the list.
  5. Click Save.
Tip: A category with no products will not look useful to shoppers. Add products before you make it visible.

Menu names change a little between OpenCart versions. In OpenCart 4, tabs and buttons look a bit different, but the steps are the same.

Quick recap

  • Go to Catalog, then Categories, then Add New.
  • Fill in the name, then use the Data tab for parent and status.
  • Save the category.
  • Add products to it from the Links tab of each product.
